Anyone who has the opportunity to perform the Hajj should carry it out with complete devotion. The Hajj must also be accompanied by everything that is halal, because otherwise, the Hajj performed may be deemed a “hajj mardud.” All Muslims who perform the Hajj hope to achieve a “hajj maqbul,” and even more so, a “hajj mabrur.” A “maqbul” Hajj is one that is accepted, while a “mabrur” Hajj is one that earns the pleasure of Allah SWT.
The opposite of a “maqbul” hajj is a “mardud” hajj. What is a “mardud” hajj?
Definition of Hajj Mardud
According to the book *What Lies Hidden Behind the Hajj Rituals* by M. Sadat Ismail, the term “mardud” derives from the root *radda-yaruddu*, which means “to reject” and “to return.” The word “mardud,” when used as the object (*maf’ul*), means “rejected.” Therefore, “hajj mardud” can be interpreted as a Hajj that has been rejected by Allah SWT.
Causes of an Invalid Hajj
As explained in the book *Dakwah Bil Qolam* by Mohammad Mufid, the Hajj can be invalidated if it is mixed with something that is forbidden and leads to sin. Imam al-Ghazali, in *Asrar al-Haj*—translated by Mujiburrahman—cites a hadith that explains the concept of an invalid Hajj.
It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
“Whoever intentionally comes to this House of Allah for an unlawful purpose is a person who disobeys Allah SWT. When he prepares to depart, his feet step onto the vehicle, then the vehicle moves, and he says, ‘Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik (Here I am, O Allah, here I am),’ then an angel calls out from the heavens in response, ‘There is no welcome for you and no happiness for you. Your work is haram, your clothing is haram, your vehicle is haram, and your provisions are haram. Return home with a mardud (rejected) Hajj, not a mabrur (accepted) Hajj, and rejoice in your wretched Hajj.” If a person performs the Hajj using lawful wealth, boards a vehicle, and as the vehicle begins to move, says, “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik,” then an angel calls out from the heavens, replying, “We welcome you, and may happiness be with you. You are bound to receive what you love; your vehicle is lawful, your clothing is lawful, and your provisions are lawful. So return with a mabrur Hajj, not a mardud one, and begin your work.”

Prayer for a Blessed Hajj
To avoid a “hajj mardud” and attain a “hajj mabrur,” pilgrims must always strive to observe the Islamic laws governing the Hajj and avoid what is forbidden. In addition to making this effort, pilgrims can also recite the prayer for a “hajj mabrur.”

O Allah, make this a righteous pilgrimage and forgive my sins.
O Allah, make this a blessed pilgrimage and forgive her sins.
Meaning: “O Allah, make this (act of worship) a mabrur Hajj and forgive my sins.”
This prayer is derived from a hadith narrated by Jarir, from Laits, from Muhammad ibn Abdurrahman ibn Yazid, from his father. He said,“

“I was with Abdullah until we stopped at the Jamrah al-Aqabah, then he said, ‘Give me some stones,’ so I gave him seven stones, then he said to me, ‘Bring me the camel’s halter.’
”
Then he returned to the Jamrah al-Aqabah and stoned it from the valley floor with seven pebbles, while riding his camel and uttering the takbir each time he threw a pebble, and he said, ‘O Allah, make this a mabrur Hajj and forgive my sins.’ Then he said, “Here stood the one to whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed.”
